The UK Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is part of the UK government’s broader strategy to support the transition to low-carbon heating systems. Government-funded, the scheme supports homeowners in England, Wales and Scotland in transitioning to low-carbon heating systems - offering grants of up to £7,500 for both air source and ground source heat pumps and up to £5,000 for Biomass Boilers.

What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a government-funded initiative aimed at encouraging homeowners in England, Wales, and Scotland to switch to renewable heating systems. The scheme offers grants of up to £7,500 for air source and ground source heat pumps and £5,000 for biomass boilers. These systems are categorised as renewable heating solutions and are designed to reduce the reliance on fossil fuels, reducing emissions while saving energy and – in turn – saving homeowners money on their utility bills.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is currently open for applications and will run until December 31, 2027, giving homeowners ample time to make the switch to a more sustainable heating solution.

  • Under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, eligible homeowners can receive the following grants to help cover the cost of renewable heating systems:

    • Air Source Heat Pump Grant: Up to £7,500

    • Ground Source Heat Pump Grant: Up to £7,500

    • Biomass Boiler Grant: Up to £5,000

These grants significantly reduce the upfront costs of transitioning to a renewable heating system, making it more accessible to a larger number of homeowners.

  • Eligibility for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme has recently been relaxed, meaning that around 74% of UK homeowners are now eligible to apply. Here are the key eligibility criteria:

    • Property Type: the scheme is open to residential homes and small businesses. The property owner must approve the application.

    • Existing Heating System: the new renewable heating system must replace an existing fossil fuel system, such as oil or gas heating.

    • Energy Performance Certificate (EPC): your property must have a valid and up-to-date Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). This certificate ensures that your property meets certain energy efficiency standards. The Vibrant Energy Saving Audit covers this, and much more.

  • To apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, you'll need to follow these steps:

    • Choose a Renewable Heating System: decide whether you want to install an air source heat pump, ground source heat pump, or biomass boiler. Book an appointment with our team to determine the best option for your property.

    • Check Eligibility: ensure that your property meets the eligibility criteria, particularly regarding your current heating system and EPC status.

    • Contact our Team: we’re here to help you through the application process and will submit the application on your behalf.

    • Receive Your Grant: once your application is approved, the grant will be applied to the cost of your new heating system, reducing the amount you need to pay upfront.

  • With the recent increase in the amount of funding available and more relaxed eligibility criteria, there has never been a better time to switch to a renewable heating system. These systems are not only environmentally friendly but can also save you money in the long run by reducing your energy bills.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a key component of the UK’s effort to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainability. By taking advantage of this scheme, you can play a role in helping the UK meet its climate goals while also benefiting from the financial support provided.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers a valuable opportunity for UK homeowners to transition to renewable heating systems with the help of government funding. By meeting the eligibility criteria and applying before the scheme ends in December 2027, you can reduce the cost of upgrading your heating system and contribute to a greener future.
